The exam is open book on paper. Does that change how you should practise?
this is the one exam day question i think is actually worth asking in august rather than october.
i do everything on a laptop. searching, notes, all of it. if the day itself is a physical index and physical materials, am i practising the wrong skill entirely

Yes, and this is a much better August question than most of the exam day board.
If you practise by searching a document, you are practising a skill you will not have. Control F is not available to you and the muscle memory you are building is the wrong muscle memory. People discover this in October and it costs them weeks.
Practise the way the day works from now on. Physical materials, physical index, find it with your hands. It is slower and that slower speed is the one you need to get good at.

Adding one thing. It also changes how you write the index, not just how you use it.
A digital index can be vague because you can search within it. A paper one has to be organised the way your hand reaches, which usually means alphabetical and flat rather than nested. If you have been building a nested one on the assumption you can search it, that is worth catching now.

Better to find that out in early August than late October.
Update, did a 30 question block entirely on paper and it took me about 40 percent longer. Glad I found that out now.
