Question

Can you share bar exam indexes with other candidates?

A friend who sat in June has offered me their index. They are not selling it or anything, they just do not need it any more.

Two questions really. Is this allowed, and is it even a good idea. Something about it feels off and I cannot articulate why, and it would save me a lot of hours.

I would think hard about that one.

An index is built out of the licensed materials, so it is not really your own separate thing to hand out. There is a copyright question there at minimum, and whoever receives it is in the middle of an application where their character gets assessed. I would not be casual about that combination.

Not trying to be the fun police. It is the kind of thing that is fine right up until it is not.

Adding the house rule so nobody has to guess.

No files here. No indexes, no summaries, no materials, no links to shared drives. Posts offering them get removed, and that applies regardless of who made the file or whether any money changes hands.

Talking about method is completely open and it is what this board is for. How you structure an index, what you tab, how much detail to include, what you cut, how you find things under time. All of that is yours and we want a great deal more of it.

The reason for the line is the one above. The materials are licensed to each of you individually, and you are all in the middle of a licensing application. This is not a place worth taking a small risk for a small convenience.

fair enough, that is a clearer answer than i expected and i had not thought about the copyright side at all. offer withdrawn.

Worth giving the practical answer too, separately from the rules answer.

Someone else's index just does not work. You find things in your own because you remember writing the entry and why you phrased it like that. Hand me the best index ever made by somebody else and I would still be slower with it than with my own mediocre one.

The hours you would save are the hours that do the learning.

This is the bit I could not articulate. Thank you. Declining the offer and starting mine this weekend.

Building it is about 40 percent of my actual studying. Outsource that and you have outsourced the studying and kept the exam.
