does knowing the day is on paper change how you should be practising now
this is the one exam day question i think is actually worth asking in august rather than october.
i do everything on a laptop. searching, notes, all of it. if the day itself is a physical index and physical materials, am i practising the wrong skill entirely

Yes, and this is a much better August question than most of the exam day board.
If you practise by searching a document, you are practising a skill you will not have. Control F is not available to you and the muscle memory you are building is the wrong muscle memory. People discover this in October and it costs them weeks.
Practise the way the day works from now. Physical materials, physical index, find it with your hands. It will feel slower and it is slower, and that is the actual speed you need to get good at.
